General information about the department

The Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies has been established at the International University of Tourism and Cultural Heritage “Silk Road” in September 2024. It consists of the leading teachers from language departments who have undergone internships and advanced training in translation and successfully manage to combine teaching and translation activities. The staff of the department is headed by candidate of philological sciences, acting associate professor Akramova Tahmina Kamiljonovna. The scientific interests of teachers are primarily in the field of communication theory, linguo-cultural studies, and didactics of translation. The department pays special attention to training specialists of scientific, literary translation from Uzbek/Russian languages into English, Chinese, Korean and other foreign languages, and vice versa. The theoretical problems of translation studies and their practical solutions from the perspective of the study of translation are realized in the target language. The modern theory and practice of translation studies general trends, types and methods of translation, stages of translation development, categories of lexical-semantic and grammatical consistency, types of translation by genres and applied techniques, linguocultural and linguogeographical peculiarities of languages. Many lecturers have international language certificates of C1 level. The teaching and research activities at the department are carried out by foreign specialists. The quality of education is ensured not only by the high qualification of the staff, but also by the availability of a good material and technical base. Classes for students - interpreters are held in a computer class equipped with headphones for interpreting, with licensed electronic dictionaries and with free unlimited access to the Internet.

 The teaching staff of the department has organized “Chinese Language Translators' Bridge” and “I am a translator too” clubs at the faculty.

The goals of the translation clubs are:

  • Deepening and strengthening the knowledge gained in the course of study; 

  • development of students' interest in translation; 

  • development of professional competence, including translation, communicative and technical competence; 

  • development of skills to solve non-standard translation challenges; 

  • preparation for all types of interpretation and translation; 

  • developing the ability to analyze major problems and difficulties of translation caused by differences in language structures; 

  • preparing students to work in various communicative and translation contexts; 

  • formation of the concept of translation ethics and norms of professional behavior of a professional interpreter. 

The Department Composition:

The Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies consists of 14 academic staff members and 2 foreign volunteers.

They include: PhD -4 people, research fellows -5 people.

Department priorities:

  • Creation of modern textbooks based on selected literature published abroad;

  • Development of educational materials for all subjects and bringing them to the students on the basis of modern information and communication technologies;

  • Organization of self-study of students on the basis of e-learning system;

  • Establishing close ties with companies in the field of translation for the purpose of career guidance of graduates;

  • Systematic monitoring of literature published abroad;

  • Involvement of students and teachers in research on the introduction of new innovative educational technologies;

  • Providing electronic educational resources of the department through the department's website in the country and worldwide;

  • Working out the principles of creating educational and methodical manuals in the state and foreign languages.

Achievements of the department:

  • Teaching staff of the department actively participate in International conferences held in the Republic of Uzbekistan, Turkey, Korea, China and other countries.

  • In 2024, 4 teachers of the department Baikabilov Kamoliddin, Yakubova Madina, Baimatova Munira, Nabiev Obid took professional development courses in the Republic of China

  • In 2024 the head of the department, PhD. acting associate professor Akramova Tahmina Kamiljonovna received an international certificate CELTA, allowing to carry out teaching activities in higher educational institutions of the world.
