Rector’s Address to Master’s Students
Dear Master’s students,
Welcome to the Silk Road International University of Tourism and Cultural Heritage.
Entering a Master’s program means entering a different stage of academic life. At this level, you are no longer here simply to receive knowledge. You are expected to question it, test it, create new knowledge and use it to generate value.
You are beginning this journey at an important moment for Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan is entering a new phase of tourism development. The national priority is no longer simply to increase the number of visitors. The challenge now is to increase value: better visitor experiences, higher-quality services, longer stays, stronger destinations, sustainable heritage management, digitalization, investment and skilled employment.
This also changes the role of our University. A university specializing in tourism and cultural heritage cannot stand outside the industry and simply observe its development. We must become part of its transformation.
Our Master’s students therefore need to work on the challenges that Uzbekistan will face tomorrow, not only on the problems described in yesterday’s textbooks. Tourism is changing rapidly. Artificial intelligence is reshaping how people plan and experience travel. Big data is changing destination management. Sustainability is becoming an economic necessity. Hospitality is becoming increasingly digital and personalized. Cultural heritage must be protected, but it must also be intelligently managed, interpreted and connected with communities. Our University must be at the center of these changes, and Master’s students should be among those helping to shape them.
I would like you to remember one simple idea throughout your studies: Your research should have a destination. Too often, the final destination of a thesis is a university archive. For us, that should not be enough. Good research should travel further. It can become a digital tool, a new service, a tourism product, a methodology or a business model. And sometimes, it can become a spin-off company. This is the research culture we want to develop at SRU.
You also have the privilege of studying in an extraordinary place. Samarkand should not simply be the city in which our University is located. Samarkand should become our living laboratory.
Tourism, hospitality, cultural heritage, urban development, traditional crafts, visitor behavior, sustainability, digital services and cultural diplomacy are all around us. You can observe them, measure them, analyze them and improve them. Very few universities have such a rich environment immediately outside their doors. We should use this advantage.
Our University Strategy sets a clear direction: We aim to become an internationally recognized center of excellence in tourism and cultural heritage education, research and innovation, connecting Uzbekistan and the Silk Road region with the world.
But international recognition does not come from declarations. It comes from the quality of our graduates, the strength of our research, the relevance of our partnerships and the impact of the knowledge we create. That is why Master’s students are so important to the future of this university.
Welcome to our university! I wish you an ambitious, productive and intellectually rewarding Master’s journey.
Thank you,
Muxsinjon Xolmuxamedov, Rector of the “Silk Road” International University of Tourism and Cultural Heritage
