For the sake of transparency of the elections to the President of the Student Parliament of the University, debates were held, which allowed all students there to get to know each candidate better.
So, on December 18th at the “Silk Road” International University of Tourism held a face-to-face round of debates among candidates for the President of the Student Parliament. In total, the election commission of the university registered 4 candidates for the post of President. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, the fourth candidate, Shodiyor Amirullaev, could not take part in the debate. The commission decided to withdraw his candidacy in the presidential election race of the Student Parliament.
It should be noted that these were not entirely classical debates, but rather meetings at which the candidates told about themselves, introduced their program to the public and discussed student problems. Thanks to this format, candidates feel responsible to the voters, who, in turn, learn about the candidates’ plans. The idea of holding a debate is aimed at making students firmly decide who to vote for.
The candidates are also confident that the debates, if taken seriously, can become the locomotive of their future actions in the presidential activities. Debates will help not only to master important skills – argumentation, critical thinking, rhetorical techniques, but also to set strategy priorities during the presidency of the Student Parliament.
“Today’s debates have taken the form of an intellectual game that trains analytical thinking, argumentation skills and public speaking. In the debates, the candidates were provided with all the conditions to defend their position, as well as voters – to determine their choice”, –
said Umid Tuygunov, Head of the Youth Policy Department and Chairman of the Commission for Presidential Elections of the Student Parliament.
